Specialist Background

Assoc Prof Dato Dr Shahrulazua Ahmad is currently teaching at the Management and Science University (MSU), Malaysia. He was formerly a Senior Lecturer and Arthroscopic Sports Surgeon at the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Hospital (2006-2009) as well at the National University of Malaysia Medical Centre (UKMMC) (2009-2015). He then worked as a Resident Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Nilai Medical Centre (2015-2016) and at ParkCity Medical Centre (2016-2026).

Dato Dr Shahrulazua graduated from St. Bartholomews and The Royal London Hospitals School of Medicine, England in 1997. He completed his housemanship at Essex County and subsequently did his basic surgical training rotations at Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust. He received his Membership of Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh (MRCS Edin) in 2001. He then became a clinical fellow to Mr A Cole (Shoulder) and Mr JW Tice (Knee) at University Hospital Southampton, England in 2002 before coming back to Malaysia to complete his specialty degree of Master in Orthopaedic Surgery at Universiti Sains Malaysia in 2006.

He further did his subspecialty arthroscopic sports surgery training at the Malaysian Military Hospitals in 2008, and then a fellowship in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery at Khung Hee University Hospital under Prof Yong Girl Rhee in 2009. Thereafter, he continued his training at Macquarie University Hospital in Sydney (2012-2014), which consisted of one-year of shoulder and elbow fellowship and one-year of hip and knee fellowship. He was awarded the degree of Master of Advanced Surgery (Orthopaedic: Shoulder; Knee) by the Australian School of Advanced Medicine, Macquarie University in 2014.

In addition to his extensive fellowship training in arthroscopy and joint replacement surgery, Dato Dr Shahrulazua also undertook training in the AO Advanced Trauma fellowship programme at the University of Innsbruck Hospital (Austria) in 2011. He also completed an Aesculap Academy training fellowship programme in Interventional Pain Management under the supervision of Dr Guatam Das, at Daradia-The Pain Clinic in Kolkata, in 2016. Additionally, he completed a fellowship programme in Endoscopic Spine Surgery and Minimally Invasive Spinal Procedures under the supervision of Dr Girish Datar, Sushruta Hospital, Miraj, India in year 2020.

Apart from being a dedicated surgeon, he has presented many lectures, published numerous articles, and became reviewers in both local and international peer-reviewed scientific journals. One of his research studies, titled as “A Finite Element Analysis of Glenoid Suture Anchor Hole Placement and Its Interaction with Variable Size Hill-Sachs Defects” won the “Sonnabend Award” for the best paper during the Australian Biennial Shoulder & Elbow Society Conference in 2014.

Dato Dr Shahrulazua has been actively involved in the Malaysian Arthroscopy Society (MAS) as a council member since the year 2019 and is currently holding the Honorary Treasurer post in the council. He is also the current Head of Sports Surgery Subspecialty Interest Group in the Malaysian Orthopaedic Association (MOA). In addition, he is the President Elect of the present council of Malaysian Society of Interventional Pain Practitioners (MSIPP) (2026-2028). He was appointed as the Kesatria Malaysia for the term 2025-2027 by the Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB).

  • Complex shoulder and knee revision surgeries (e.g. rotator cuff and labrum repair) 
  • Cartilage reconstructive surgeries (e.g. simple:  microfracture; and complex: autologous chondrocyte implantation) 
  • Meniscus (simple/complex) surgeries. E.g. repair, partial meniscectomy, transplantation/replacement surgeries
  • Ligaments reconstruction including knee ACL, PCL, lateral collateral and medial collateral; ankle ATFL and other complex multi-ligamentous surgeries 
  • Patella mal-alignment and instability surgeries 
  • Sports-related injury interventions (e.g. wrist and ankle sprain) 
  • Minimally-invasive surgery, ganglion cyst, lipoma and other lumps excision 
  • Nerve decompression surgeries  (e.g. Carpal tunnel release; Tarsal tunnel release)   
  • Surgery for tendon and fascia disease (e.g. De Quervain's wrist, Trigger Finger, Dupuytren contracture, Plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis)   
  • Joint replacement (arthroplasty) of shoulder, elbow, hip and knee. E.g. Total Knee Replacement (TKR), Total Hip Replacement (THR), Total Shoulder Replacement (TSR), Radial Head Elbow Replacement, Total Elbow Replacement
  • All fractures and dislocations treatment/surgery of upper and lower limbs (e,g, closed reduction, cast, plate, nail, wires) 
  • Cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine procedures:- Radiofrequency neurotomy and facet block injection, nucleoplasty, discectomy, epidural injection, epiduralysis, dorsal root ganglion block, Endoscopic Spine Surgery (ESS), Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery  
  • Fluoroscopy and Ultrasound-guided Pain Interventional procedures (shoulder/elbow/wrist/hand/hip/knee/ankle/foot). E.g. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP), hyaluronic acid, steroid, radiofrequency ablation (RFA)  
  • Deformity surgeries (e.g. fracture malunion, hallux valgus, foot bunions, Mallet finger)
